Fortnite Confirms Kingdom Hearts Crossover: Sora Arrives Thursday

After years of rumors, Epic Games has officially confirmed the partnership with Square Enix: Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Roxas are landing in the battle royale this Thursday (17).

A wait that's dragged on for years is finally over: Epic Games has officially confirmed that Kingdom Hearts is crossing over into Fortnite. Sora, the series' longtime protagonist, got his own reveal trailer this week, picking up a Keyblade-shaped pickaxe — with the usual Mickey Mouse charm swapped out for a Fortnite Loot Llama, a little visual joke that only really lands if you've already spent way too much time in the game.

The crossover drops this Thursday (the 17th), around 7 AM Eastern, alongside the v42.20 update as part of Chapter 7, Season 4: Override. Alongside Sora, Epic confirmed three more skins: Riku, Kairi, and Roxas — Sora's "Nobody," who first became playable in Kingdom Hearts II.

Sora's chosen look here is his Kingdom Hearts II outfit, which tracks — it's the most recognizable version of the character, all buckles and chains, practically a 2000s pop-culture icon at this point. And it's not purely cosmetic either: the Kingdom Key is also confirmed as a playable Mythic weapon in matches, not just a pickaxe skin sitting in your locker.

Here's the thing: this is just one more crossover in a season that's already been stacking partnerships almost daily, but this one hits different. Square Enix treats Kingdom Hearts with something close to reverence, so watching Sora share screen time with Sonic, Ryu, and Mega Man says a lot about how Fortnite has quietly become a kind of living museum for gaming's biggest icons. If you grew up playing the original trilogy on PS2, it's a bit of a mixed feeling — genuinely nice to see the character show up again, but also a reminder of how much these crossovers have lost their novelty by now.

Expect the usual sales model: standalone bundles in the Item Shop, skipping the season's battle pass entirely, which for a partnership this size was never really in doubt. The real question is whether Square Enix uses the moment to say anything about Kingdom Hearts IV, still without a release date, or whether this crossover ends up just being a consolation prize for fans who've been waiting almost a decade for the next mainline game.
